The oriel and the cantilever: one desire, five centuries apart

Walk down a street in an old Hanseatic town and, sooner or later, a building will lean over you. A bay of brick and timber pushes past the wall it belongs to, carried on stepped corbels, wearing its own little roof — an oriel, watching the street from above. Now cross town to the newest district and look up again: a crisp box of concrete and glass hangs in the air, reaching past its support as if the ground were merely a suggestion. Five centuries apart, two structures are doing exactly the same thing. They are leaning out of themselves.

This note is about that lean — the oldest recurring desire in the vocabulary of building — and about why the studio's catalogue opens with these two cards side by side.

The appetite for projection

Why does a building want to exceed its own outline? The honest answers have barely changed. Light, first of all: a bay that steps beyond the façade collects daylight from three directions instead of one, which in a deep medieval plot was the difference between a chamber and a cellar. Sight, second: the oriel is an observation post — you see the length of the street, not just the house opposite. Ground, third, and most human of all: where the plot ends at the wall, the air above the street belongs to nobody, and architecture has never been able to resist free real estate. And finally status: projection is expensive, structurally daring, and visible to everyone. A merchant's oriel was a balance sheet carved in stone.

Swap the merchant for a developer and the street for a skyline, and every one of those four motives survives intact in the contemporary cantilever. The glazed box reaching over the plaza gathers panoramic light, commands the view, colonises air that costs nothing, and — let us be honest — shows off. The desire did not change. Only the physics of satisfying it did.

How masonry learned to lean

Stone and brick are strong in one way only: they like being pressed together. Ask masonry to hang, to stretch, to work in tension — and it opens like a book. So the medieval builder solved projection the only way compression allows: by stepping. Corbels — stone or brick brackets, each course reaching a hand's width past the one below — walk the load of the bay diagonally back into the thick body of the wall. The oriel does not really hang; it stands on an invisible staircase, and the mass of masonry above the corbels anchors the whole bargain. It is a beautiful, honest deal: a modest reach, paid for with real weight, every term of the contract visible from the pavement.

How concrete learned to fly

Reinforced concrete rewrote the contract, because steel inside the section finally gave building material a talent masonry never had: tension. A slab could now be gripped at one end and stretched into the air, its hidden reinforcement doing quietly what corbels once did loudly. The cantilever is the oriel with the staircase removed — the reach grew tenfold, the visible support vanished, and the drama moved from ornament to structure itself. Where the Gothic mason displayed the mechanism, the modern engineer displays its absence; the strut, when it appears at all, is drawn as a single elegant diagonal, a signature rather than a confession. Gravity, as the catalogue card puts it, politely postponed.

What the sketch still knows

Put the two drawings side by side and something happens that no photograph quite manages: they become the same diagram. A vertical anchor. A horizontal reach. A diagonal that carries the argument between them — stepped and multiple in the oriel, single and taut in the cantilever. This is why the studio insists on beginning every catalogue card with a pencil line, in an age when a scanner can harvest fifty million points from a façade before lunch. The point cloud records what a thing is, with magnificent indifference. The sketch records what a thing is trying to do. Documentation needs both: geometry without intention is an inventory, intention without geometry is an anecdote.

Detail as evidence

There is also a darker thread connecting the two elements, and it runs through my other field of work. The timber-framed cousins of the oriel — the jettied upper floors that once leaned over almost every northern European street — were pruned back, city by city, by fire. Overhanging combustible storeys narrowed the street's airspace, passed flame from one frontage to the next, and after each great conflagration the rebuilding ordinances grew stricter about what a house might do above a passer-by's head. The projecting bay survived where it turned to brick and stone; the rest of the habit was legislated away. Fire safety, then as now, is a quiet co-author of architectural form.

The cantilever will leave its own evidence for future historians. It testifies that our era trusted calculation absolutely, preferred structure invisible, and considered the gesture of weightlessness worth a considerable premium. Every element in the catalogue is a witness statement of this kind — which is precisely why they are worth sketching, scanning and, occasionally, printing small enough to hold.

Coda

The catalogue will keep growing in pairs like this one wherever the pairing is honest: tracery and space frame, corbel and bracket plate, brise-soleil and shutter. Same desires, new physics. If you know a building whose lean deserves a card of its own — the studio is listening.
